Apple M1 vs Intel performance editing photos in darktable

Apple’s new ARM-based M chips are receiving praise, and Apple is in the middle of a complete line-up migration to their internally designed chips. Nevertheless, the market expects one more generation of the Intel-based Mac Pro, and Apple currently offers a mix of M1 and Intel-based computers; not to mention competition from non-Apple machines. What should be my next upgrade?

I tested performance of darktable running across the 16″ Macbook (Intel Core i9) and M1-based Mac Mini; as well as comparing the same machine running both Mac OS and GNU/Linux, to understand how darktable performs in various configurations, and what to look for for optimal performance when editing photographs in darktable.

In doing so, we compare the performance of the M1 vs. the current 16″ Intel-based Macbook Pro, and graphics performance of the M1 GPU, Intel GPU, and discrete Radeon video cards–and look at how eGPUs may help.
