GTA Trilogy Definitive Edition PC Optimization Guide – No More Random FPS Drops

  • by

GTA Trilogy Definitive Edition on the PC is probably the least optimized game of the year so far. But there can be ways to fix those random FPS drops.

0:00 – *sigh*
0:35 – Car Reflections
1:17 – Those damn shadows
1:37 – Demanding shadows alternative #1
2:04 – Demanding shadows alternative #2
2:39 – Other settings don’t matter
3:07 – TL;DR

VERY IMPORTANT: ENTER -dx12 IN THE LAUNCH ARGUMENTS OF YOUR GTA GAME.

ROCKSTAR GAMES LAUNCHER METHOD:
1. Open Rockstar Game Launcher
2. Go to Settings (Upper Right)
3. Go to your GTA Trilogy Game under My Installed Games (Left Panel)
4. Put -dx12 in Launch Arguments field

DESKTOP SHORTCUT METHOD:
1. Right-click game shortcut
2. Click Properties
3. In target field, after “X:blablabla”, add ONE space and type -dx12
4. Hit apply

I also encourage NVIDIA users to use DLSS. With DX12, the game will not be CPU-heavy anymore and WILL properly use your GPU to scale performance. It turns out, DX11 is the main culprit of this game after all.
